What began as an ordinary train ride in Mumbai turned into a night of courage, quick thinking, and human kindness.
At around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Vikas Bedre, a video cameraman, was travelling in a local train when a woman in the adjacent compartment went into labour as the train neared Ram Mandir station in north Mumbai.
Without hesitation, Bedre pulled the emergency chain, stopping the train. What happened next would make headlines and melt hearts.
An unexpected hero on the railway platform
As panic spread among passengers, Bedre realised there was no time to wait for medical help. The woman was already in advanced labour, 'the baby was halfway out,' said fellow passenger Manjeet Dhillon, who later shared the story on Instagram.
“This man is truly brave, words aren’t enough to describe him. It truly felt like God had sent him there for a reason,” Dhillon wrote in his viral post.
With no doctors on board and the ambulance still minutes away, Bedre quickly called his friend, Dr. Devika Deshmukh, who joined the situation through a video call.
A delivery guided through a smartphone
Over the call, Dr. Deshmukh instructed Bedre step-by-step on how to handle the delivery safely.
“He managed to get a pair of scissors from a tea stall on the platform,” she told a Marathi news channel, recalling the tense moment. “He also gathered bed sheets to create a clean space for the delivery.”
Under her guidance, Bedre successfully helped the woman deliver a baby boy right there on the railway platform.
“I was very scared,” Bedre later admitted. “But Devika’s help gave me courage. It was because of her guidance that I was able to manage the delivery.”
A viral moment of courage and compassion
Both the mother and the newborn are reportedly healthy and were later taken to a nearby hospital.

Dhillon’s video of the incident has since gone viral, with social media users calling Bedre a “real-life Rancho,” comparing him to the quick-thinking protagonist from 3 Idiots.
“We all tried our best, we called several doctors, but the ambulance was taking time. Finally, a female doctor guided him over video, and he did exactly what she instructed. His courage in that moment was beyond words,” Dhillon wrote.
According to Dhillon, the woman’s family had earlier taken her to a nearby hospital, but were told that the delivery could not be done there, forcing them to return by train.
