Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for evading a question on Gautam Adani indictment issue in the US. He accused the Prime Minister of "covering up" the alleged corruption of his businessman “friend”.

Taking to social media platform X, Gandhi stated that the Prime Minister maintains silence when questions are asked in the country and terms it a “personal matter” when asked abroad.

"If you ask questions in the country, there is silence. If you ask abroad, it is a personal matter! Even in America, Modi Ji covered up Adani Ji's corruption!" Gandhi said in his post in Hindi.

“When filling a friend’s pocket is “nation building” for Modiji, then taking bribes and looting the nation’s wealth becomes a “personal matter,” the Congress leader added.

During a joint press briefing with US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked if the ‘Gautam Adani case’ was a topic of discussion between the two leaders.

To which the Prime Minister replied, "India is a democracy and our culture is 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'. We consider the whole world as one family. I believe every Indian is mine."

Modi said such individual matters are not discussed in talks between two leaders. "Two prominent leaders of two countries never discuss such individual issues," he said.

Last November, US authorities brought charges against Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and senior Adani Group executives, alleging their participation in a $250 million bribery scheme connected to solar power project contracts in India. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) accused them of securities and wire fraud, arguing they misled US investors about their anti-corruption pledges while engaging in bribery. The Adani Group refuted the allegations, labeling them "baseless."

Following the allegations, the Opposition has intensified its attack on the BJP government, making the issue a focal point during the Parliament winter session last year, which was marked by protests and walkouts by the INDIA bloc.
