The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday dismissed a Bloomberg report that claimed Chinese President Xi Jinping had sent a “secret” letter to Indian President Droupadi Murmu.
“We have seen that report and can confirm that the story about the letter is incorrect," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said addressing the media.
Bloomberg had earlier reported, citing an anonymous official, that Xi had written to President Murmu to find out New Delhi’s views on improving bilateral ties, with the message intended for PM Modi and the Central govt.
The denial comes at a time when India-China relations are witnessing a cautious thaw following US President Donald Trump’s steep tariff measures.
Trump has accused both India and China of being “tariff abusers” and blocking US businesses while continuing to export heavily to America.
Trump’s 50% tariff on Indian goods has inadvertently pushed New Delhi and Beijing closer.
Prime Minister Modi met Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China, where the two leaders discussed key issues. Beijing reiterated support for India in the face of Trump’s “bullying” trade policies.
