Ruling out gang-rape in the death of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is preparing a “watertight charge sheet” against the lone accused, Sanjay Roy, according to News18.
His DNA matched with samples collected from the body of the victim. CBI insiders told News18 that there is no evidence to suggest the involvement of any other person.
Arrested on August 10, one day after the alleged murder, Roy was discovered with a Bluetooth headset inside the seminar hall where the crime took place. Roy (33), a former civic volunteer, reportedly had easy access to the state-run hospital. On August 23, Roy was sent to 14 days of judicial custody. Kolkata Police arrested him on August 10, a day after the trainee doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall on the fourth floor of RG Kar Hospital.
CBI officials told CNN-News18 that forensic tests carried out by experts have also returned results that have gone against the suspect.
The CBI is under pressure from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has been widely criticised by many over the crime. Last week she demanded an update. "I asked for five days' (for the police to probe before she called in the federal agency) but the case was sent to the CBI. They don't want justice. They want a delay. It has been 16 days, where is justice?" she said.
Meanwhile, according to reports, Roy recently told his lawyer Kavita Sarkar that he is innocent. Roy claimed that he found the woman lying in an unconscious state when he entered the seminar hall. He reportedly said he did not know the victim. Roy is currently lodged in a high-security ward at Presidency Jail. According to prison officials, Roy has been largely isolated and appears to be nervous, exhibiting signs of fear.
The RG Kar case has made major headlines across the country and the world. Protests from medical professionals, gender and civil society activists, and, last but not least, from the opposition BJP and Congress in Bengal, are being held across the cities.
