Rajesh Khimji, the 41-year-old man from Rajkot, who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at her residence during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ session at her camp office, has reportedly told the police that he planned to attack the Chief Minister with a knife but refrained from doing so due to security.
According to News18, Khimji said he intended to attack the CM with a knife, but seeing the tight security arrangements, he threw the knife away in the Civil Lines area.
Khimji also told the investigators that before going to the CM’s official residence, he had gone to the Supreme Court as well, but had returned after seeing heavy security outside the court.
The accused was arrested, and a case under various charges, including attempt to murder, was registered against him. He was remanded to five days’ custody after he was produced before the duty magistrate at his residence on August 21, a day after the attack.
According to the report, before being produced before the magistrate, Rajesh was taken to Aruna Asif Ali hospital for a medical checkup, following which he was referred to the LNJP Hospital.
Gupta on Friday made her first public appearance since the attack on her, saying that the trans-Yamuna area will be brought to the forefront of the city's growth.
She asserted that she will never be scared and defeated, and will continue to struggle for the rights of Delhi, as she resumed official engagements two days after the attack.
Addressing an event in Gandhi Nagar in the trans Yamuna area of the city, Gupta said struggle was her "unwavering resolve".
Gupta was attacked by the Rajkot resident, Khimji, during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her camp office in Civil Lines area of the city on August 20.
"Your chief minister will neither be scared, nor tired and defeated. I will continue to struggle alongside you till Delhi gets its rights. This is my unwavering resolve," she stated.
After the attack, Gupta was confined to her residence. She resumed her official engagements by attending the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Association of Wholesale Garment Dealers in Gandhi Nagar, the biggest ready-made garment hub of Asia.
