IndiGo passenger slaps co-traveller aboard Mumbai-Kolkata flight; video surfaces online

A video of the incident has gone viral across social media platforms

An IndiGo passenger slapped another traveller who was standing in the aisle, onboard a Mumbai-Kolkata flight on Friday.

The incident took place in the flight 6E138 and upon landing, the offender was handed over to the security team at Kolkata airport, according to the airline.

In a statement, the airline condemned the actions of the unruly passenger, terming it as "unacceptable".

"We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew. Our crew acted in accordance with established standard operating procedures. The individual involved was identified as unruly and handed over to the security authorities upon arrival. All appropriate regulatory agencies have been duly informed, in line with protocol," the airline said.

It further stated that it remains committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on all its flights.

A video of the incident has gone viral across social media platforms. The video shows a passenger sitting in his seat suddenly slapping another passenger on the aisle who started crying and was moved away from the spot immediately.

In the video, a cabin crew can be heard telling, “don’t do” to the seated passenger while the fellow passengers condemn the act and tell him that he does not have the right to hit anybody.

One of the passengers is also heard saying that the person who was hit was having a panic attack.

The reason for the passenger slapping the fellow passenger was not immediately known.

It was not immediately known whether the incident happened when the aircraft was preparing for takeoff or when it was mid-air.

The flight was operated with an Airbus A321 aircraft.
