India successfully test-fired an air-surface anti-radiation missile from a Su-30MKI fighter jet off the coast of Odisha at approximately 11:30 am on May 29, stated the Ministry of Defense.
The RudraM-II anti-radiation supersonic missile is developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The missile's performance was validated using flight data captured by range tracking instruments such as electro-optical systems, radar, and telemetry stations deployed by the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, at various locations, including onboard the ship, as per the ministry's statement.
Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, IAF, and the industry on the successful test-flight of RudraM-II. He stated that the successful test has strengthened the position of the RudraM-II system as a force multiplier for the Armed Forces.
The RudraM missile is the first domestically developed anti-radiation missile designed to target enemy ground radars (surveillance, tracking) and communication stations in Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) missions. The RudraM-II represents the latest version, following the testing of the mark-1 version four years ago by the Su-30MKI, which serves as the backbone of India's fighter fleet.
The RudraM-II, an indigenously developed solid-propelled air-launched missile system, is among the most advanced and is designed to neutralise various types of enemy assets. Currently, India operates the Russian Kh-31, which is an anti-radiation missile. The Rudram missiles are intended to replace the Kh-31s, offering enhanced capabilities and reliability.
The missile can be launched from a variety of altitudes and has the capability to detect enemy radio frequencies and signals from radars at ranges exceeding 100 km. It is equipped with Lock-On-Before/After-Launch systems, providing flexibility in targeting. Additionally, the missile features an internal guidance system that enables it to autonomously navigate towards the target after launch.
