Getting a driving license just became easier!
Marking a significant shift in how Indians obtain their driving licence, the ministry of road transport has announced new set of rules that is expected to simplify the process and reduce the long queues witnessed at regional transport offices (RTOs) for driving tests.
Starting June 1, applicants will have the option to undertake driving tests at private driving training centres, instead of going to state-run RTOs.
What are the other key changes
-Applicants can give their tests at private training centres, which will issue certificates for licence eligibility as well
-The government has also simplified the documentation requirements for new licence applications. Starting June, documents will have to submitted based on the type of vehicle, which will reduce the need for physical review at RTOs.
-The new rules have also increased the penalty in cases where minors are found driving. In such incidents, a fine of Rs 25,000 will be imposed, while the vehicle owner’s registration will be cancelled. Moreover, the minor won’t be eligible for a licence till the age of 25.
-The government also has plans to phase out 900,000 old government vehicles to reduce carbon emission. It will also enforce stricter emission norms.
The government has also drawn new rules for training centres
-The training centre will need to have at least 1 acre of land for training on light motor vehicles, while 2 acres of land will be required for heavy motor vehicles training. These centres will also have to provide access to their testing facilities.
Application fees
Under the new rules, issuance of a learner’s licence will cost Rs 150, while applicants for learner’s licence test will have to pay Rs 50. Driving tests will be charged at Rs 300 and a fee of Rs 200 will be levied for the issuance of a driver’s licence.
