The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the proposal of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to submit a bid for hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
The Cabinet also cleared the signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA), along with the required guarantees from concerned ministries, departments and authorities. In case the bid is successful, the Centre will provide grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government for organising the event.
"The Commonwealth Games 2030 are expected to see participation from athletes representing 72 countries, besides attracting coaches, officials, tourists and media personnel, thereby boosting local businesses and generating revenue," an official statement said.
Ahmedabad has been pitched as the ideal host city, with world-class stadiums, advanced training facilities and a strong sporting culture. The Narendra Modi Stadium, which successfully hosted the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final, is expected to be a centrepiece venue.
Officials said hosting the Games would not only showcase India’s sporting capabilities but also create large-scale opportunities in sports science, event operations, logistics, transport, media, IT, public relations and other sectors.
Beyond sports, the event is expected to provide a significant fillip to tourism, job creation and the wider economy, while inspiring millions of young athletes and fostering greater participation in sports. The government said the Games would also strengthen national pride and unity by providing a shared experience for the country.
