15 people, including four women and four children, lost their lives when a roadways bus collided with the van they were traveling in from behind on National Highway 93 in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh on September 6, according to officials. Thirteen others sustained injuries in the crash and have been hospitalized.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed district officials to promptly provide necessary relief measures. The Chief Minister has also mandated that officials ensure the injured receive proper medical treatment.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Nipun Agarwal reported that the accident occurred when a bus attempted to overtake a van on the Agra-Aligarh National Highway. The incident took place near Kanwarpur village, approximately 10 kilometers from the district headquarters. The passengers were en route to Agra from Hathras.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the victims and wished a swift recovery for the injured. He announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the family of each deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
The local administration is providing all possible help to the victims under the supervision of the state government, he said on X.
President Droupadi Murmu also offered her condolences and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the accident. "The news of the death of several people in a road accident in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," Murmu said in a post on X in Hindi.
