Aam Aadmi Party will extend support to JKNC in Jammu and Kashmir, the party announced

Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its decision to support the incoming National Conference (NC) government in Jammu and Kashmir. A formal letter of support was submitted by AAP to the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

On Tuesday, AAP achieved its first victory in Jammu and Kashmir's Assembly elections. The party's candidate, Mehraj Malik, triumphed in the Doda constituency, surpassing his nearest rival from the BJP by a margin of over 4,538 votes.

Malik, a District Development Council (DDC) member, polled 23,228 votes against BJP's Gajay Singh Rana's 18,690 votes.

"Aam Aadmi Party will extend support to JKNC in Jammu and Kashmir. The letter of support has been submitted to the Lt Governor. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has one MLA of AAP," the party said.

In the recent Assembly polls, NC emerged as the single largest party, securing 42 seats. With its alliance partners, the Congress winning six seats and the CPI(M) claiming one, the coalition comfortably surpassed the majority threshold in the 95-member House.

Following the poll verdict, Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the National Conference legislature party.

“A meeting of the NC legislature party took place, the legislature party decided its leader and I am thankful from the bottom of my heart to the NC legislators that they have reposed their faith in me and given me a chance to stake claim for government formation," Abdullah told reporters.

He said four of the seven Independent MLAs have extended support to the NC, taking the party's strength to 46.
