The Asia Cup, traditionally contested in the 50-over format, experienced a landmark change in 2016 when it was held as a T20 International (T20I) event for the very first time. For the initial 12 editions between 1984 and 2014, the tournament remained an ODI competition, during which India and Sri Lanka emerged as the most successful sides with five titles each, while Pakistan lifted the trophy twice.
The 2014 edition in Bangladesh was particularly significant as it marked Afghanistan’s debut appearance, ending with Sri Lanka defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the final.
The following year, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) underwent a major restructuring under the International Cricket Council (ICC), which assumed most of its developmental responsibilities. Although the ACC’s role was reduced, it continued to oversee the Asia Cup. Importantly, a new rotational format was introduced, ensuring that the tournament would alternate between ODIs and T20Is, depending on which ICC event—either a World Cup or T20 World Cup—was approaching.
This adjustment led to the 2016 edition being played in T20 format, synchronizing with the ICC World Twenty20 scheduled later that year. Bangladesh, for the third time in a row, had the honour of hosting the competition.
