Nifty choppy; SBI, Bharti, HUL, ICICI Bank down

Equity benchmarks started the session on a flat note for fifth consecutive session today. Market could be waiting for state elections' results. Even Asian markets were mixed in trade.

Equity benchmarks started the session on a flat note for fifth consecutive session today. Market could be waiting for state elections' results. Even Asian markets were mixed in trade.


Portfolio Manager, PN Vijay sees the election result being a positive for the Congress and says that, for the markets, elections are only an event and not a trend.


Among frontliners, ONGC, Dr Reddy's Labs (ahead of numbers today), Hindalco, Sterlite Industries, BPCL, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries and Infosys were on buyers' radar.


Siemens rallied 2% post strong January-March quarter. PAT was up by 53% at Rs 278 crore.


However, Rarnbaxy Labs, NTPC, ITC, HUL, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, SBI and ICICI Bank were witnessing selling pressure.


At 9:18 hours IST, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading at 18,355, up 19 points and the 50-share NSE Nifty rose just 6 points to 5,492.


The CNX Midcap too gained 10 points at 7,950. Market breadth was positive - about 529 shares advanced as against 319 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.


New listing - Innoventive Industries was trading at Rs 98, down 16% compared to issue price of Rs 117 a share.


Midcap & Smallcap space:


MTNL and Great Offshore were down post results.


Jubilant Foodworks was up 2.5% and Coal India up 1.5%.


Oil marketing companies like IOC and HPCL gained 1.5% after government provided subsidy of Rs 20,000 crore.


Delta Corp was up 3% as company acquired 51% stake in Daman Hospitality for an amount of Rs 50 crore/


SKS Micro rallied 5%. Circuit of the stock had reduced to 10% on Tuesday and from today it is 5%. In previous three days - stock rallied 30%.


Karuturi Global gained 4% post fourth quarter numbers. PAT jumped 5%.

Global cues


Asian markets were mixed in trade. Hang Seng, Nikkei and Kospi were down 0.2-0.6%. However, Shanghai, Straits Times and Taiwan were flat.


The US markets ended with marginal gains on Thursday amid news that China raises rates by another 50 basis points. Commodities recovered after early slide.


China's central bank raised reserve requirements for the fifth time this year; hiked 50 basis points to record 21%. The move came after Chinese CPI data more than expected.


The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 66 points at 12,696. NASDAQ Composite was up 18 points at 2,863 and S&P 500 Index rose 6.6 points at 1,348.


Commodities


June crude oil contract went up 0.8% at USD 98.97/barrel. It bounced back after hitting a low of USD 95.25 ((was down 5% during the day))


Brent crude was down 0.5% at USD 112.43/bbl, bounced from a session low of USD 110.15 a barrel.


July silver contract fell 1.5% at USD 34.99/ounce; bounced back after hitting a low of USD 32 ((was down 8% during the day))


June gold went up 0.4% at USD 1507.5/ounce


June natural gas contract gained 0.2% at USD 4.19 per MMBtu

Total stock futures Open Int add 1.94 cr shares in Open Int


Nifty futures Open Int add 20.35 lakh shares in Open Int, discount at 4.80 pts versus discount at 0.40 pts


Nifty Open Int PCR at 0.95 versus 0.98


Total Put adds 12.16 lakh shares, call adds 36.24 lakh shares


Highest Open Int outstanding at 5800 call, 5400 put and 5600 call


Nifty 5500 call adds 16.8 lakh (42%) shares in Open Int ((prem down frm 109.35 to 70.95))


Nifty 5600 call adds 8.80 lakh (14%) shares in Open Int ((prem down frm 50 to 34.85))
