FSSAI lens on Nestle for baby food sugar levels, more brands face scrutiny: Reports

FSSAI's scientific committee is currently examining the matter, with a report expected within a month.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a comprehensive investigation into allegations of Nestle selling baby food products with higher sugar content in the country, according to a report by CNBC-TV18 citing sources. The probe aims to assess the potential violation of regulations by Nestle and other brands selling baby food and formula milk.

FSSAI's scientific committee is currently examining the matter, with a report expected within a month. Following the committee's findings, FSSAI will determine the appropriate course of action. This investigation comes as a response to concerns raised by the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry after reports surfaced alleging discrepancies in baby food sold by Nestle in India compared to global standards.

Furthermore, FSSAI has expanded its scrutiny to include all brands selling baby food and infant formula milk, with plans to evaluate compliance with prescribed guidelines. Strict measures are anticipated against those found to be non-compliant.

In a separate development, FSSAI has initiated a sampling of spices from various brands, including MDH and Everest, across the country. This action follows quality concerns flagged by Singapore and Hong Kong authorities regarding Indian spices, particularly related to the presence of pesticide 'ethylene oxide' beyond permissible limits.

While FSSAI regularly monitors the quality of spices sold in the domestic market, the Spices Board of India is investigating the ban imposed by Hong Kong and Singapore on certain spice-mix products of Indian brands.
