Digital India to propel economy to its best era: Oracle

Oracle is already working with 20 states across the country in different areas of payment and smart city initiatives, the company's president Loïc Le Guisquet said.

Modi's Digital India push has found another supporter in the IT firm Oracle.

Oracle is already working with 20 states across the country in different areas of payment and smart city initiatives, the company's president Loïc Le Guisquet said.

In a conversation with CNBC-TV18's Malvika Jain, Guisquet said the Digital India mission has the capacity to propel the Indian economy to its best era so far.

Guisquet said: “This is an opportunity for India to leapfrog many of the older countries and regions of the world and we are absolutely committed, very engaged at many levels in the government and in the states to support that ambitious program."

Oracle currently has 33,000 employees and 11 Research & Development (R&D) centers in the country. The company has embarked on a massive recruitment drive in India to expand its base, Guisquet said.

“Demand for IT growing faster in India than other regions,” he said adding that traditional IT still has atleast ten years before it is taken over completely.

Below is the transcript of Loïc Le Guisquet’s interview with CNBC-TV18's Malvika Jain

Q: What do you think about the Digital India mission?

A: The pitch is very strong and has made a lot of noise and for the right reasons. What is done here with Digital India is absolutely right. We are completely convinced that this will propel, propulse the India economy into the next era very quickly.

This is an opportunity for India to leapfrog many of the older countries and regions of the world and we are absolutely committed, very engaged at many levels in the government and in the states to support that ambitious program.

Q: What kind of opportunities are you seeing for Oracle when you say that you want to support this initiative, what can we expect from Oracle?

A: A lot of things. We are investing in many dimensions. We are working with all of the states to support a large number of initiatives. We actually are working with 20 states, many different programs around smart cities, around a lot of different things, payments, to help India go to the next phase in its development.

We are very optimistic, very engaged. We have got a big portfolio of solutions that can really support all of that program and we are putting all of that muscle we have in solutions and expertise we have to help it make a big progress.

Q: Any particular investment figure that you have in mind when you think of India or is it going to be ongoing basis that you would be investing in the country?

A: We have already a huge presence in India. I don't know whether you know but 33,000 people here are working. We have got 11 R&D centres across the country in many different states. We just embarked recently on a big recruitment program around the region but in particular in India and meet those objectives much faster than we thought.

So, we are increasing the team very rapidly just to support that program and to cloud in general because we think this is what is needed for India, it is the right solution at the right time and we have got the right resources, IP to make it happen.
