The World Porridge Making Championship was held in the Scottish Highlands and to the surprise of many, a first-time competitor Sven Seljom from Madnal in Norway clinched the Golden Spurtle trophy, outperforming30 competitors from across the world.
About winning the title, Seljom, who is a care technology consultant, said: "I’m lost for words. It has been such great fun to be here - the welcome in the village, the hall arrangements, it’s just been tremendous." He also added that he had heard about the World Porridge Making Championship many years ago on Norwegian radio and thought it sounded really different. "I’ve wanted to enter ever since,” he shared.

Take a look at the post:
The highlight of the contest is that participants are required to make the best traditional porridge using just three ingredients and they are oatmeal, water and salt. Wondering what Seljom did so different and good that made him win the coveted title? Well, he made the porridge using Norwegian black oats with sea salt and water which he had got from his home. "The oats I used came from an organic farm, and I soaked them for 24 hours before the competition," the winner shared. What's more is that these specific oats used to be grown all over Europe before disappearing in the 1800s. It was Seljom's love for experimenting with different types of steel cut oats that somewhere contributed to his win.
This time around the competition attracted wide audience, with thousands of people joining via online channels like Facebook and YouTube.
Porridge chieftain Alan Rankin said, "Congratulations to Sven on taking home the highly-coveted title of World Porridge Making Champion and the Golden Spurtle trophy." He also added that the standard this year was exceptional and it was wonderful to see the event go from strength to strength.
Besides, there was also an additional prize for the best speciality porridge. For the same, participants could combine oatmeal with other ingredients. Australian food stylist Caroline Velik won the prize for it.
