Home remedies for fungal infections: Use a pH-balanced body wash and shower twice daily to remove sweat and impurities. This simple routine helps prevent the accumulation of fungi on your skin

When it rains, it pours infections. Fungi such as dermatophytes, yeast, and molds thrive in the high humidity of the monsoon season, leading to a surge in conditions like athlete's foot, ringworm, and candidiasis. The increased moisture from the humidity not only amplifies sweating but also compromises the skin barrier, making it more vulnerable to these fungal invaders. As sweat and moisture accumulate, they create an ideal breeding ground for these fungi, giving rise to skin issues.

While the rainy season brings a welcome respite from the heat but also tags along high humidity that can spell trouble for your skin. Says Dr Shilpa Reddy Gill, Dermatologist at Zennara Clinics, “The increased moisture creates the perfect environment for fungal infections, which thrive in warm, damp conditions. Maintaining good hygiene and using appropriate skincare products can help manage and prevent these issues.”

Dr Gill suggests the following tips to maintain healthy, fungal-free skin:

Cleanse: Humidity encourages fungal growth, so it’s essential to keep your skin clean. Use a pH-balanced body wash and shower twice daily to remove sweat and impurities. This simple routine helps prevent the accumulation of fungi on your skin.

Avoid oils: Skip oil-based skin care products during the monsoon. Oils can trap moisture and create an environment where fungi thrive. Opt for water-based or gel formulations that won't clog your pores or exacerbate humidity-related issues.

Exfoliate: Include a mild exfoliator into your skincare routine twice a week. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and prevents the buildup that can harbor fungi. This step keeps your skin smooth and less prone to infection.

Moisturise: After exfoliating or showering, immediately moisturise your skin to maintain its barrier. A good moisturiser prevents the skin from becoming too dry or irritated, which can be a breeding ground for fungi if left untreated.

Change clothes: Always shower and change into fresh clothes immediately after exercising. Sweat-soaked clothing can encourage fungal growth, so keep your workout gear clean and dry.

No sharing: Don’t share personal items like towels, soaps, clothes, and shoes. Fungal infections can easily spread through contaminated items, so it's best to keep your personal hygiene products to yourself.

Choose fabrics: Wear breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking materials. These fabrics allow your skin to breathe and help keep you dry, reducing the risk of fungal infections.

Follow hygiene: Pay special attention to genital hygiene. Wipe the area with tissue after using the restroom, wear 100 percent cotton underwear, and use a pH-balanced, fragrance-free wash to keep things clean and dry.

Monitor your BP: If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely. High blood sugar can increase your susceptibility to fungal infections. Maintain a balanced diet and avoid sugary foods to manage your condition effectively.

Pet care: Keep your pets clean and dry. Pets can also be carriers of fungal infections. Regularly check your pets for any signs of fungal issues and consult a vet if necessary.

Manage stress: High stress can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to infections. Practice stress-relieving techniques such as meditation, exercise, or hobbies to keep your stress levels in check.

Probiotics: Consider adding probiotics to your diet. They help support your immune system and maintain a healthy balance of bacteria, which can help prevent fungal infections.

Hydrate: Stay well-hydrated and maintain a balanced diet. Proper hydration and nutrition support overall skin health and bolster your immune system against infections.

Consult a doctor: If you notice persistent rashes, itching, or redness, seek advice from a dermatologist. These symptoms could indicate a fungal infection or other skin issues that require professional treatment.
