RIP Rohit Bal: A 'bloom in the universe' of fashion, like his final show Kaaynaat

The Indian fashion industry mourns the loss of Rohit Bal, the celebrated designer and industry icon, who passed away on Friday, November 1, at the age of 63. Affectionately known as “Gudda” in the industry, Bal’s creative genius and unique aesthetic have been synonymous with Indian couture for over three decades. With his passing, India bids farewell to one of its most visionary designers, whose artistry went beyond mere fashion to embody the cultural heritage blended with global influences.

Bal’s journey in fashion was groundbreaking, with designs that challenged conventions and introduced a bold new narrative to Indian couture. His work was a seamless blend of traditional Indian aesthetics with a modern flair, a vision that defined and elevated the industry itself. Known for his signature lotus motif and exquisite Kashmiri embroidery, Bal’s garments were rich in detail and drew on India's cultural depth. He was not only a designer but also an artist, known to incorporate vibrant colors, intricate designs, and luxurious fabrics, particularly his favoured mulmul and velvet, into creations that were truly one-of-a-kind.

Despite health challenges, including a heart ailment that led to his ICU admission last year, Bal made a recent comeback, presenting his final collection last month at the Lakmé Fashion Week. His finale show Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe was held at Delhi's Imperial Hotel and depicted nature’s beauty symbolised through floral motifs. His showstopper creation was worn by actress Ananya Panday on the runway, and later the same outfit was worn by Isha Ambani for a public appearance.

The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), of which he was a founding member, honuored his legacy, stating in an Instagram post, “We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. His work redefined Indian fashion, inspiring generations. Rest in peace GUDDA. You are a legend.”

Bal’s shows were more than fashion displays; they were immersive experiences. His Gulbagh show at Qutub Minar in 2015 remains one of his most talked-about productions, remembered for its grandeur and his ability to evoke India’s cultural essence against a historic backdrop.

Described as a “wild child” and a “fashion maverick,” Bal lived with a passion that mirrored his work. He was often the life of elite parties and soirees and remained unapologetically candid about the industry’s changing face.

Beyond the runway, Bal’s legacy includes a rich tapestry of influences, from vintage wines to art books, that informed his work and his life. His favourite colour, off-white, and his signature floral motifs and artisanal Kashmiri techniques reflect his love for simplicity and elegance, crafted with extraordinary skill. Bal’s contributions have left an indelible mark on Indian couture, establishing a language of beauty and elegance that will inspire future generations.
