Onam, the grand harvest festival of Kerala, is celebrated with elaborate ‘Sadya’ feasts, prayers, and traditions that bring families and communities together. From the iconic Pookalam (floral rangoli) to the grand feast known as Sadya, the festival is a time of joy, unity, and cultural pride. It's also an occasion where beauty takes center stage, with women donning traditional sarees, intricate jewelry, and stunning makeup to complement the festivities.
According to Sabhyata Bali, Founder & CEO of Zygos Beauty, “When it comes to creating a beautiful, elegant makeup look for Onam, I always believe in keeping things soft and traditional with a touch of glow.”
Bali shares her top tips and tricks for achieving that timeless Onam look
Fresh, radiant skin: Start with a lightweight base, such as a dewy foundation or even a BB cream. The goal is to keep your skin looking fresh and shining. “I usually apply a bit of luminous primer before the foundation and a soft highlighter on the cheekbones and nose for a natural glow,” says Bali. This gives you that subtle radiance without going overboard.
Neutral eyes with a hint of tradition: For your eyes, neutral tones like gold, bronze, or peach are perfect for Onam. They add warmth while keeping the look soft. A thin liner and a few coats of mascara will define the eyes without overdoing it. You can even add a hint of kajal for a more traditional touch if that’s your vibe.

Naturally shaped brows: Your brows are important too. Go for a natural, well-shaped look by lightly filling them in. This frames your face beautifully without appearing too intense, keeping the focus on your eyes and lips.
Soft blush: A soft blush in peach or rose tones will give your cheeks a fresh, festive flush. Make sure to blend it well so it looks seamless. The goal is to enhance your features without it being too obvious, keeping the overall look soft and elegant.
Traditional lips, modern twist: When it comes to lips, a classic red lipstick always brings that traditional elegance, but if you want something more low key, a nude or soft pink works just as beautifully. Whether you choose a bold or subtle lip, a satin or creamy finish will tie the whole look together.
