Celebrated designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla recently unveiled their new collection at Art Mumbai, inspired by A Thousand and One Nights. The ensembles from the special evening have now been posted on the designers’ official handle, and one particular creation has caught the attention of netizens.

For the show, model Nin Kala wore a sheer gota Anarkali in the most stunning olive green shade. As described by the designers, the panelled shirt was edged with multiple gota borders in rich colours of red, green, and black that brought glamour and charm.

While a daring neckline drew eyeballs, what really distracted was the translucent fabric of the long shirt, revealing her stone-encrusted gold underpants. Her ensemble was paired with a complementary red dupatta. It was heavily embroidered and featured intricate black and gold detailing.

Another post saw model Meenakshi Rathore in a sheer brown lehenga that looked equally adventurous and bold. It featured a similar design and gold underpants. The designers captioned it: “Meenakshi shines in a sheer lehenga paired with a matching blouse and bejewelled underpants. The ensemble features colourful Gota work, entirely embroidered by hand.”

This attempt by the designer duo redefines Indian couture in many ways, adding a bold, spirited spin to traditional designs. The signature maximalism was accompanied by intricate hand-detailing, impeccable tailoring, and sensual silhouettes.

The internet couldn’t help but be amused by the designer’s new approach to desi clothing. There was a section which was all praise and posted fire and heart-struck emojis. One user called it “stunning,” while another said it was “so good.”

However, a majority slammed the couture designers for disrespecting tradition. A user commented, “It seems like a mockery of our South Asian culture.” Another wrote, “Let’s respect women, lingerie visibility isn’t a fashion statement or a trend worth following.”

Many couldn’t get the point of the entire look, and one asked, “I mean, why? What’s the point? What’s the intention?” Another slammed saying, “When renowned designers start to behave like small-time wannabe influencers, this is the result.”
