Did you know that natural essential oils for skincare are an age-old beauty secret? Instead of using various chemical-based products on your face and body, try these natural essential oils that are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fatty acids which will make your skin look young and healthy.

Natural oils like jojoba, tree tea, rosehip and argan can hydrate, protect, and rejuvenate your skin without the chemicals that are found in many synthetic products.

These oils can moisturise, reduce acne, brighten your skin and tighten pores. Here’s a guide to some of the best natural face oils and how to use them for glowing, healthy skin.

  • Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs easily and doesn’t clog pores, making it great for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin. Research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, in fact, discussed how the structure of jojoba oil closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum, making it ideal for balancing oil production.

Jojoba oil moisturises, balances oil production, reduces redness, and helps with acne.

When to use: Use it in the morning and night, after cleansing and drying your skin. Apply 3-4 drops of the oil directly or mix it with your moisturizer. Massage gently until it absorbs.

  • Rosehip seed oil

Rosehip seed oil is loved for its anti-ageing properties. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology shows that its high vitamins A and C content aids in boosting collagen production as well as reducing scars.

Its high content of essential fatty acids makes it excellent for hydrating and restoring the skin’s natural glow.

When to use: Applying 2-3 drops of rosehip oil at night by gently pressing it into your skin with your fingertips can help to brighten the skin, reduce dark spots, and improve skin texture.

  • Argan oil

Often called “liquid gold,” argan oil is lightweight, non-greasy, and easily absorbed, making it ideal for dry to combination skin types. It hydrates, softens skin, reduces signs of ageing, and helps with sun damage. According to the Journal of Dermatological Treatment, argan oil has moisturising and protective qualities, especially on dry or mature skin.

When to use: Use this oil morning or night before makeup or as part of your night routine. Argan oil can also be used to smooth flyaway hair or as a moisturizer for nail cuticles.

  • Marula oil

Marula oil is great for dry, sensitive, or ageing skin as it helps to restore moisture and strengthen the skin’s barrier, as noted by the Journal of Dermatology. Marula oil hydrates, smooths skin texture, reduces fine lines, and improves skin elasticity.

When to use: Ideal for night use but can also be applied in the morning if your skin feels dry. Use it as a primer under your makeup for extra hydration.

  • Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, according to Clinical Microbiology Reviews, making it a great choice for acne-prone skin. It helps reduce blemishes, calm redness, and prevent future breakouts. However, it’s potent, so always dilute it before use.

When to use: Tree tea oil is best used for spot treatment for blemishes and acne at night to avoid sun sensitivity. Don’t forget to dilute a drop or two of the oil with a carrier oil (like jojoba or almond) to avoid skin irritation, and avoid going out in the sun after applying.

  • Sweet almond oil

Sweet almond oil is gentle and rich in vitamin E, making it perfect for dry or sensitive skin. Its nourishing properties help smooth rough patches, reduce dark circles, and improve overall complexion. The International Journal of Molecular Sciences also highlights sweet almond oil’s ability to hydrate and repair the skin.

When to use: Apply 3-4 drops of the oil to the skin in the evening after cleansing, and massage until absorbed. Use it to soften dry lips or smooth rough patches on elbows and knees.

  • Grapeseed oil

This lightweight oil is excellent for oily and acne-prone skin. It will help balance the oil on your face, hydrate and tighten pores. The oil’s high linoleic acid content and its role in reducing acne and inflammation is discussed in the Journal of Dermatological Science.

How to use: You can use this oil morning and night, especially after you shower to lock in the moisture. Mix a few drops into your moisturizer to help keep skin matte throughout the day.

  • Olive oil

Olive oil is rich in vitamins A and E, which help protect the skin and prevent premature ageing. While heavier than other oils, it moisturizes deeply and softens skin.

When to use: Since the oil is heavy, it’s best to use at night and is best suited for dry or ageing skin. After cleansing, warm a few drops between your hands and apply to the face, massaging well. You can also use it as an occasional face mask by applying a slightly thicker layer and rinsing after 15 minutes.

Use sparingly, as it can feel heavy for some skin types. By choosing the right oil for your skin type and applying it at the appropriate times, you can achieve a healthy, radiant glow without the need for synthetic ingredients.
