Healthy, vibrant hair is often seen as a sign of good health and beauty. However, factors such as environmental pollution, excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, and even poor nutrition can lead to hair becoming damaged and lifeless. Fortunately, you don't have to rely on commercial products to restore your hair’s natural shine and strength. DIY oil treatments made from natural ingredients can offer a more sustainable and effective solution.

Here’s a guide to creating your own oil recipes that can help rejuvenate your tresses:

Coconut and argan oil treatment for deep moisturisation

Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil, 2 tablespoons
  • Argan oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Lavender essential oil (optional for fragrance), 5 drops

Method:
  1. Warm the coconut oil in a bowl until it is in a liquid state.
  2. Add the argan oil and lavender essential oil, mixing well.
  3. Apply the mixture to your scalp and hair, focusing on the ends where damage is most likely to occur.
  4. Massage the oil into your scalp for a few minutes to stimulate blood circulation.
  5. Leave the treatment in for at least an hour, or overnight for a more intensive treatment.
  6. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and condition as usual.

Why it works: Coconut oil is a natural emollient, rich in lauric acid, which helps to penetrate the hair shaft, providing deep hydration. Argan oil is packed with vitamin E and fatty acids, which help to repair and nourish damaged hair, leaving it soft and shiny.

Olive and castor oil blend for hair strengthening

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil, 2 tablespoons
  • Castor oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Rosemary essential oil (optional for added scalp stimulation), 5 drops

Method:
  1. Mix the olive oil and castor oil in a small bowl.
  2. Add the rosemary essential oil and stir well.
  3. Section your hair and apply the oil blend to your scalp and roots.
  4. Massage your scalp for 5-10 minutes to ensure even distribution and to enhance absorption.
  5. Leave the oil on your hair for 1-2 hours.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and a gentle shampoo.

Why it works: Olive oil is a powerful conditioner, rich in vitamins A and E, which help to smooth the hair cuticle and repair damage. Castor oil is known for its ability to strengthen hair and promote growth due to its high ricinoleic acid content. This blend is ideal for those looking to strengthen their hair and prevent breakage.

Jojoba and sweet almond oil serum for shine and smoothness

Ingredients:

  • Jojoba oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Sweet almond oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Ylang-ylang essential oil (optional for fragrance), 3 drops

Method:
  1. Combine jojoba oil and sweet almond oil in a small glass bottle.
  2. Add ylang-ylang essential oil and shake well to blend.
  3. Take a few drops of the oil serum and rub it between your palms.
  4. Apply the oil to the ends of your hair, avoiding the roots to prevent greasiness.
  5. Use this serum as a leave-in treatment to add shine and smoothness to your hair.

Why it works: Jojoba oil closely resembles the natural sebum produced by our scalp, making it excellent for balancing oil production. It adds shine without weighing the hair down. Sweet almond oil is rich in vitamins and minerals that help to smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and adding a natural shine.

Avocado and grapeseed oil mask for repairing damaged hair

Ingredients:

  • Avocado oil, 2 tablespoons
  • Grapeseed oil, 1 tablespoon
  • Honey (optional for extra hydration), 1 teaspoon

Method:
  1. In a bowl, mix avocado oil and grapeseed oil.
  2. If desired, add honey and mix until well combined.
  3. Apply the mask to clean, damp hair, focusing on the most damaged areas.
  4. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave the mask on for 30 minutes.
  5. Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water, followed by shampoo and conditioner.
Why it works: Avocado oil is rich in vitamins B and E, which help to repair and nourish damaged hair. Grapeseed oil is light and non-greasy, making it perfect for sealing in moisture without weighing the hair down. The addition of honey adds extra hydration, making this mask ideal for severely damaged hair.
