How to choose the right comb for your hair type and texture

The right comb isn’t just an accessory -- it’s an extension of your hair care ritual. Whether it’s a humble plastic tool, a handcrafted wooden piece, or a gemstone-studded luxury comb, the best one is the one that loves your hair back.

It is said that a good hair day often starts with something deceptively simple -- the right comb. Whether you’re detangling post-shower strands, creating a sleek bun, or just massaging your scalp, the humble comb does far more than tame your tresses. Over centuries, combs have evolved from purely functional tools into intricate accessories. But to choose the one that’s best for you, let’s untangle the mystery.

Know your material: from plastic to precious

Combs come in a variety of materials, and each serves a purpose. Plastic combs are the most common as they are lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to find. They’re great for everyday use, but they can create static, especially in dry weather, making your hair frizz-prone. Wooden combs, on the other hand, are a timeless favourite. Gentle on the scalp and eco-friendly, they help distribute natural oils from root to tip, leaving hair shinier and healthier. They also reduce static and work beautifully for those with dry or curly hair.

Metal combs are sleek and durable, best suited for thick or coarse hair that needs firm detangling. However, they’re not ideal for fragile or fine hair, as the rigid teeth may cause breakage if used roughly. Ivory or bone combs (now often replaced by ethical faux versions) were once prized for their durability and intricate craftsmanship. And, there are embellished combs that are adorned with gems, crystals, or pearls and can double up as hair accessories for special occasions. These add instant glamour to buns, chignons, or half-up hairstyles and can be decorative as well as practical.

Match it to your hair type:

The secret to choosing the right comb lies in understanding your hair texture and needs.

Fine Hair: Opt for a narrow-toothed or rat-tail comb for precision styling and gentle teasing. Avoid wide gaps as they can flatten delicate strands.

Thick or Curly Hair: A wide-tooth comb is your best friend. It detangles without tugging and defines curls without frizz.

Wavy Hair: Use a wide-tooth comb on damp hair to preserve the natural wave pattern.

Straight Hair: A flat, fine-tooth comb helps smooth flyways and distribute products evenly.

Coarse Hair: Choose a sturdy wooden or metal comb with wider teeth for ease of movement through dense strands.

Dos and don’ts:

Your comb comes into contact with natural oils, hair products, and dust, making regular cleaning essential. Soak it once a week in warm water with a few drops of mild shampoo or vinegar, then scrub gently with an old toothbrush to remove residue. Wooden combs should be wiped with a damp cloth instead of soaked to prevent warping.

When combing wet hair, start from the ends and work your way up to prevent breakage. Use a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner if your hair is prone to knots. For scalp health, gently massage with a wide-tooth wooden comb as it stimulates blood flow and promotes hair growth naturally.

Never share combs as it’s an easy way for bacteria or dandruff to spread. Store them in a dry, clean pouch, especially if you use styling products regularly.
