Love to have armchairs and sofas in your living room, but not sure how exactly to match them? The ideal furniture arrangement is less about matching pieces and more about creating a sense of harmony; one that allows each piece to contribute to a comfortable, stylish, and personal space.
A living room is a reflection of how you live. Says Avenish Jain, founder-designer of Spin, a design brand, “Start with a focal point, let the furniture flow, and focus on the balance of structure and personality. Design is not something that is fixed, it’s discovering what feels intuitively right.”

He adds that the trend of perfectly matching armchairs and sofas is passé now. “Modern design leans toward a curated mix of pieces that fit together effortlessly, even if they aren’t identical. People are more drawn to a blend of contrasting shapes, colours, and textures that add depth and visual interest to a room. Today, the focus is on creating spaces that feel as though they’ve evolved over time, informal, yet intentional,” Jain says.
If you are going for a makeover of your living room, Jain suggests you should keep these tips in mind:
Define the room’s focal point: Before arranging your armchairs and sofas, take a moment to identify the focal point of the room. It could be a statement wall, a striking piece of art, a large window that frames an outdoor view, or even a bold rug. “Once this anchor is established, arrange your seating around it to create a natural flow that brings the room together. The result will be a space that feels purposeful, not disjointed,” Jain suggests.
Symmetry and asymmetry: Symmetry in furniture placement can bring structure and order to a room. For example, pairing a three-seater sofa with two identical armchairs creates a classic look. But an overly symmetrical arrangement may feel stiff or predictable. For added personality, consider asymmetry: a long sofa, for example, paired with a unique lounge chair and perhaps a sculptural stool. “The trick is to blend elements of both symmetry and asymmetry: mirrored pieces offer stability, while unexpected arrangements inject character,” he says.

Mix shapes, but maintain a common thread: Contrast is essential to creating an engaging, dynamic space. Pair a structured, angular sofa with softer, cocoon-like armchairs, or juxtapose a minimalist chair with a plush, oversized couch. “However, it’s important to keep the look cohesive by finding common threads, such as shared fabrics, similar leg styles, or complementary materials,” suggests Jain. For instance, mixing linen and leather can help unify your varied choices, ensuring that the overall effect feels intentional rather than mismatched.
Scale and proportion are key: Proportions play a critical role in maintaining visual harmony. “A bulky sectional with delicate armchairs may feel out of balance, while a streamlined sofa with similarly scaled armchairs will create a more cohesive look. Pay attention to seat heights and avoid allowing one piece to overpower the others in both scale and presence” tells Jain When all the pieces are appropriately proportioned, they work together to create a space that feels grounded and unified.
Experiment until it feels right: Not a rocket science, design is a process of trial and error. Don’t hesitate to move pieces around, swap out chairs, or try different layouts until you find what feels most natural. The goal is to create a space that resonates with your personal style and fits your lifestyle. Jain adds, “Allow yourself the freedom to experiment, adjusting the furniture until it feels just right,” Jain says.
