The Met Gala 2024, renowned as fashion's Oscar night, unfolded with an extravagant celebration of style under the theme 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' this year. Elite attendees graced the occasion adorned in delicate fashion pieces, honoring centuries of style evolution often overshadowed in the fast-paced realm of fashion, and some interesting Indian designers and guests left an indelible mark on the green carpet, embodying the essence of 'The Garden of Time' dress code.
Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt made a striking impression at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute benefit gala this year following the “The Garden of Time” theme and mesmerised onlookers in an exquisite floral sari by designer Sabyasachi. This marks her second consecutive appearance at the prestigious event, following her charming debut last year in a captivating ensemble by Prabal Gurung.
Speaking about her designer sari and the traditional look for the evening, the actress wrote on her Instagram page, “It was a call to the Garden of Time - an ode to art and eternity. Timelessness is endless, and we acknowledge that things crafted with time and care, can last forever. In our journey for an Indian interpretation of this universal theme, the outfit took on a life of its own.” (SIC)
While most Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities at the gala were seen in exquisite gowns and dress, Alia made a mark with her Indian outfit and spoke about her choice of ensemble in an online post.
Elaborating the look, she posted, “Nothing embodies tradition and innovation like the saree; in the skilled hands of @sabyasachiofficial, this vision found its fullest expression. We looked to the past as a guide for the future, drawing inspiration from the timeless sophistication of Indian nobility. We focused on intricate craftsmanship, incorporating hand embroidery, precious stones, along with elegant beadwork and fringes, distinctive of the 1920’s fringe style. Our colour palette pays homage to nature’s beauty, echoing the earth, sky, and sea. We embraced a delicate nostalgia for hair and makeup - an elevated coiffure embellished with intricately woven braids and soft freckles - a homage to time’s gentle caress.” (SIC)
At MET 2024, Alia wore matching old-world jewellery and a potli bag with her sari, and channeled an old-world princess look on the prestigious platform. The actress mentioned that it took a collective effort of 163 dedicated individuals, including master craftspeople, embroiderers, artists, and dyers, investing a total of 1965-man hours to create the ethereal sari with floral details. Although, her look was praised by fellow Bollywood actors and her fans, a few pointed out that it was too repetitive of the designer to dress all the actresses in similar fashion time and again.
