Mpox cases on the rise, here's how to protect yourself against monkeypox

Mpox symptoms are similar to smallpox, though they are generally less severe. The disease, caused by the monkeypox virus, spreads through close contact with an infected person’s lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials. Here's how you can stay safe by following these simple precautionary measures.

The rise in mpox (monkeypox) cases worldwide has become an increasing concern. Originally confined to Central and West Africa, where it is endemic, mpox has spread to several countries outside these regions in recent years. The outbreak marks a significant global shift, with cases reported in Europe, America, and parts of Asia. This unprecedented spread is attributed to international travel, close contact, and possibly changes in the virus itself. Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, presents with symptoms similar to smallpox, though generally less severe. The disease spreads through close contact with an infected person’s lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials. The rise in cases has led to public health warnings and calls for heightened surveillance and vaccination efforts, particularly in high-risk populations.

The global health community is concerned about the potential for mpox to become a more widespread and persistent issue, particularly in areas where vaccination against smallpox, which also offers some protection against mpox, has been discontinued. Efforts to contain the virus include promoting awareness, improving diagnostic capabilities, and ensuring access to vaccines and treatments, with the aim of curbing the rising tide of infections. To safeguard against mpox (monkeypox), there are several precautions you should take, according to Dr Shikha Bansal, a senior consultant with Vinayak Hospital, Dwarka.

Avoid close contact with infected people: Mpox is primarily spread through close contact with an infected person’s skin, lesions, or bodily fluids. Avoid close physical contact with anyone who has symptoms of mpox, such as rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.

Do not share personal items: Items like towels, bedding, and clothing can carry the virus. Avoid sharing these items with others, especially if they have or might have mpox.

Avoid consuming undercooked meat from suspected carrier animals: Mpox can also spread through contact with infected animals, particularly those that carry the virus, such as certain rodents and primates. Avoid consuming undercooked meat from these animals.

Do not ignore symptoms: If you experience symptoms of mpox, such as a rash, fever, or swollen lymph nodes, do not ignore them. Seek medical advice promptly to avoid worsening your condition and potentially spreading the virus to others.

Avoid touching wildlife in endemic areas: If you are in or travelling to areas where mpox is endemic, avoid contact with wild animals, especially those that are sick or dead.

Do not delay vaccination if recommended: In some cases, vaccination may be recommended, especially if you are at higher risk. Delaying or avoiding vaccination could increase your risk of contracting the virus.
