Intense throbbing, itching or irritation inside the ear canal? It could be swimmer's ear

Immersing yourself in water, whether it be a pool, lake, or ocean, is a good way to find respite from the summer heat. However, failing to take precautions can lead to water becoming trapped in the ear canal. This stagnant moisture creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, paving the way for swimmer's ear.

Swimmer's ear, clinically known as otitis externa, presents an array of discomforting symptoms. These include ear pain, which can vary from mild discomfort to intense throbbing, itching or irritation inside the ear canal, redness and swelling of the outer ear, drainage of clear, yellow, or pus-like fluid from the ear, decreased hearing or a sensation of fullness in the ear, and in severe cases, fever, indicating potential spread of infection.

Follow these strategies to address swimmer’s ear:

Dry your ears : After swimming or showering, tilt your head to each side to allow water to drain from the ears. Gently dry the outer ear with a soft towel, avoiding insertion into the ear canal to prevent irritation.

Water proof: Wear waterproof earplugs or a snug-fitting swim cap to create a barrier against water entry during aquatic activities.

Avoid inserting objects: Refrain from using cotton swabs, hairpins, or other objects to clean or scratch inside the ear canal, as this can damage the delicate skin and exacerbate symptoms.

Use ear drops: Over-the-counter ear drops containing a combination of alcohol and acetic acid or a diluted solution of white vinegar can help dry excess moisture and prevent bacterial growth.

Apply warm compress: Place a warm, damp cloth over the affected ear to reduce  pain and swelling. Ensure the compress is not too hot to avoid burns.

Consult a doctor: If symptoms persist or worsen despite home care measures, consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Treatment may involve prescription ear drops containing antibiotics, corticosteroids, or antifungal agents, depending on the underlying cause and severity of the infection.

Prevention is better: Prioritise ear hygiene by keeping ears clean and dry, especially after water activities. Avoid swimming in polluted or contaminated waters, as they increase the risk of infection.
