Stem cell therapy, which is also known as regenerative medicine, is a treatment that promotes the natural repair response of diseased, dysfunctional or injured tissues by using stem cells or their derivatives. With to the recent advancements in medical science, this therapy is gaining popularity in India. With more clinics offering these treatments, India is becoming a hub for professional stem cell therapy.

Stem cell therapy is a potentially effective way to treat cancer by using stem cells to restore or repair damaged tissues. It is possible to guide the targeting of stem cells towards cancer cells, hence reducing damage to healthy tissue. Moreover, they can alter immune function to strengthen anti-cancer defences.

What is stem cell?

The process of stem cell therapy begins with the isolation of stem cells, which can be sourced from various reservoirs such as bone marrow, adipose tissue, or embryonic tissue, says Dr Aravind Badiger, Technical Director, BDR Pharmaceuticals. These stem cells are then cultured and manipulated in the laboratory to enhance their therapeutic properties, he says.

In the context of cancer treatment, stem cells can be engineered to express tumour-targeting receptors or carry anti-cancer drugs, enabling precise and targeted delivery to cancer cells.

After undergoing stem cell therapy, patients often find themselves at a pivotal juncture in their health journey. While the therapy itself holds promise for rejuvenation and healing, integrating certain lifestyle changes can further enhance its effectiveness and promote overall well-being.

Lifestyle changes to consider after undergoing stem cell therapy

Follow a healthy diet: Transitioning to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can provide essential nutrients to support the body's healing process. Incorporating foods with anti-inflammatory properties, such as fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens, may also aid in reducing inflammation and promoting tissue repair.

Exercise regularly: Engaging in regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining strength, flexibility, and overall health. Depending on individual capabilities and medical advice, incorporating activities such as walking, swimming, yoga, or gentle strength training can help improve circulation, promote healing, and enhance overall vitality.

Manage stress: Managing stress levels through relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness practices can be beneficial post-stem cell therapy. Chronic stress can negatively impact the immune system and impede the body's healing processes, so finding effective stress management strategies is essential for promoting overall well-being.

Get adequate sleep: Prioritising quality sleep is essential for allowing the body to rest, repair, and rejuvenate. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night and establish a consistent sleep schedule to support optimal healing and recovery post-stem cell therapy.

Stay hydrated: Staying adequately hydrated is essential for supporting cellular function, promoting detoxification, and maintaining overall health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day and limit consumption of sugary or caffeinated beverages that can dehydrate the body.

Avoid harmful substances: Limiting or avoiding harmful substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drugs can support the body's healing process and promote overall health. These substances can interfere with the body's natural healing mechanisms and compromise the effectiveness of stem cell therapy.

Go for regular medical check-ups: Attend regular follow-up appointments with healthcare providers to monitor progress, address any concerns, and adjust treatment plans as needed. Maintaining open communication with healthcare professionals is crucial for ensuring optimal outcomes post-stem cell therapy.

Stay positive: Cultivating a positive mindset and surrounding oneself with a supportive network of friends, family, and healthcare professionals can have a profound impact on recovery and overall well-being. Stay optimistic, focus on progress, and seek support when needed to navigate the challenges of post-therapy life.
