Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity. Raising a child with ADHD can feel overwhelming, but understanding the condition and having effective strategies in place can make a world of difference.

According to a study conducted at SUNY Upstate Medical University and the University of Colorado, ADHD is a psychiatric condition that affects children’s ability to focus, manage impulses, and function in daily life. With early recognition, support, and the right techniques, children with ADHD can thrive.

Research suggests that the symptoms of ADHD often emerge before the age of 12 and must persist for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily activities in multiple settings such as school, home, and social environments. Previously known as two separate conditions, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were merged under one umbrella in the DSM-IV with three subtypes: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined.

Children with ADHD frequently experience challenges with executive functioning, which impacts their ability to focus, organise, make decisions, and regulate emotions, suggests the study. These difficulties often lead to social struggles, academic underachievement, and behavioural issues, sometimes causing them to be unfairly labeled as troublemakers.

It’s essential to approach ADHD with compassion and evidence-based strategies to support children in managing their symptoms effectively.

Here are 8 ways to deal with ADHD in children:

Understand the diagnosis: Learn about ADHD and its symptoms. Understanding the condition is the first step to supporting your child and advocating for their needs at school and home.

Set consistent routine: Create a structured daily schedule for your child. Consistency helps children with ADHD feel secure and reduces their tendency to get distracted.

Divide and rule: Large tasks can overwhelm a child with ADHD. Simplify the tasks by breaking them into smaller, more manageable steps to keep them focused and motivated.

Encourage physical activity: Regular exercise helps reduce hyperactivity and improve focus. Encourage your child to participate in sports or other physical activities they enjoy.

Celebrate wins: Celebrate small victories and reward positive behaviors. Positive reinforcement can build their self-esteem and encourage them to repeat good habits.

Limit distractions: Create an environment that minimises distractions during homework or tasks. Use tools like noise-canceling headphones, timers, or designated quiet spaces.

Teach emotional regulation: Help your child recognise and manage their emotions. Techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, or talking through feelings can help them stay calm and less impulsive.

Seek professional support: Consult a doctor, therapists, and educator to develop a comprehensive plan for managing ADHD. Medication, therapy may be helpful.
