Bollywood actress Sanya Malhotra broke the internet with her stellar performance in the 2023 film, Mrs. She portrayed a woman quietly standing up against domestic patriarchy and received positive reviews from the critics.
The film also received backlash from certain men’s groups, particularly the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF). They accused the film of pushing a one-sided feminist narrative.
However, Sanya has recently given a befitting reply to the accusations and the backlash. During her recent appearance at CNN-News18 SheShakti 2025, Sanya said, “Problem yeh nahi hai ke khana nahin bana chahti hai. Woh khana bana rahi thi. Woh to saja ke bhi de rahi hai, with zero appreciation from the family (The problem isn’t that she didn’t want to cook. She was cooking, even serving it nicely, but getting zero appreciation from the family).”
The actress elaborated, “The problem arose when she wanted to do something, and she showed that family that I am capable of doing ghar ka kaam, and I want to go out and do something that I love to do (She showed the family that she is capable of managing the household and also wants to go out and pursue something she loves).”
“Aur woh usko karne nahin diya jaa raha, woh freedom nahin diya jaa rahi. Jinke paas story pahunchni thi wahan pahunch chuki hai (But she wasn’t allowed to do that she wasn’t given the freedom. The story has reached the people it needed to reach),” added Sanya.
Sanya’s statement came after several claimed that Mrs incorrectly depicts domestic tasks like cooking, cleaning, and laundry as oppressive, implying that the protagonist's rebellion was due to her desire to avoid cooking for her family after marriage.
Mrs also stars Nishant Dahiya and Varun Badola in the key roles. The film revolves around Richa, a dancer and an independent woman, who marries into the family of Diwakar, a doctor. However, things become complicated when she is forced to adhere to patriarchal standards for a wife.
