British comedian and actor Russell Brand has been formally charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault, as announced by the Metropolitan Police on Friday. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation into historical sexual offenses, following allegations made by several women. The comedian, now 50 years old, faces a total of five charges: one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. These alleged incidents are said to have occurred between 1999 and 2005.
The investigation was sparked by a joint inquiry conducted by British broadcaster Channel 4 and The Sunday Times in September 2023. The inquiry featured detailed accounts from four women who accused Brand of sexual assault or rape. The identities of the accusers have been kept confidential, though their testimonies have been central to the charges.
Brand, known for his provocative humor and appearances in films such as Get Him to the Greek, has strongly denied the allegations. In a video statement released after the accusations surfaced, he insisted that all his relationships were “always consensual.” Brand's legal team has continued to refute the charges, and the comedian maintains his innocence in the face of the investigation.
Previously a mainstay of British mainstream media, Brand hosted popular radio and television shows, and was known for his high-profile marriage to pop singer Katy Perry. However, in recent years, his career has taken a turn toward online platforms, where he has amassed a significant following. His content, which touches on topics such as wellness and conspiracy theories, has resonated with many viewers. He has also reportedly relocated to the United States, further distancing himself from his previous media career.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Brand will appear at a London court on May 2, where he will face formal proceedings. The case continues to develop, and the outcome will likely have significant implications for both Brand’s career and the broader conversations surrounding sexual assault allegations in the entertainment industry.
