Priyanka Chopra's mother Madhu Chopra recently opened up about the challenging decision to send her daughter to boarding school at the tender age of seven — a choice that continues to haunt her to this day. In an emotionally charged conversation with Rodrigo Canelas on the Something Bigger Talk Show podcast, Madhu delved into the reasons behind this difficult decision and the lasting emotional impact it has had on her.
Born into a family of medical professionals, Priyanka Chopra spent much of her early childhood moving from place to place due to her parents' demanding careers. To provide a more stable environment for Priyanka amidst their hectic schedules, Madhu and her husband, both doctors, decided to send her to boarding school. While practical given their professions, this decision came with a significant emotional cost.
Madhu expressed her lingering regret, saying, "I don't know, was I a mean mother? I still regret it. I still cry over it. It was very hard for me, too." Despite the separation's pain, Madhu managed her decision with love and commitment. She would visit Priyanka every weekend, sacrificing her own comfort to spend time with her daughter.
However, this routine began to disrupt Priyanka’s ability to adjust to boarding school life. "Every Saturday, I would leave my work and take a train to visit her. That was becoming disruptive for her because she was not able to adjust to her boarding school. Saturday, she would wait for me to arrive, and then on Sunday, I would stay with her. And all week, the teacher told me, ‘Stop coming. You can’t come,’” Madhu explained.
Looking back, Madhu feels a mix of regret and pride. While the decision was incredibly tough, Priyanka not only adjusted but also thrived in her environment. “So that is one regretful decision, but Priyanka turned out alright. She landed on her feet,” Madhu shared.
Despite the challenges of her early schooling, Priyanka remains extremely close to her mother, who has supported her through life’s many ups and downs.
On the work front, Priyanka Chopra continues to soar with several exciting projects lined up, including The Bluff, Heads of State, and the next season of the highly anticipated series Citadel.
