Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut is once again at the center of controversy. Recently, Ranaut took to Instagram to congratulate wrestler Vinesh Phogat for her historic achievement at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Phogat made history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the finals of the 50 kg freestyle wrestling tournament. However, Ranaut’s congratulatory message did not sit well with many netizens.

Ranaut credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing Phogat with the opportunity and facilities to compete at the Olympics.

She pointed out that this support came despite Phogat's participation in protests against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and her slogan “Modi Teri kabar khudegi” (Modi, your grave will be dug) during the protest last year.

Her story read, “Fingers crossed for India's first Gold Medal.... Vinesh Phogat at one point took part in protests where she raised the slogans of ' Modi teri Kabr khudegi' Yet she was given the opportunity to represent the nation and best of the training, coaches and facilities,. Beauty of democracy and a great leader”

Ranaut’s comment was met with a wave of backlash on social media. Many netizens felt that her remarks were inappropriate and diminished Phogat’s personal efforts and achievements.

Critics argued that Phogat’s success was due to her hard work, dedication, and skill, rather than political support.

One user commented, “Being a woman, instead of supporting women's cause, she is credited to PM for allowing champion to play. That is why our nation is still struggling to reach finals though we have talented players. Apathy among leaders towards sports cause.” Another wrote, “And Kangana believes that protesting against the govt should result in denying you your rightful opportunities?”

Some also pointed out that Ranaut’s post seemed to undermine the legitimate grievances that led Phogat and other wrestlers to protest against the WFI. “Athletes protested for valid reasons. Congratulate them without undermining their struggles,” a netizen remarked.

The controversy has sparked a broader discussion about the intersection of sports and politics in India. As the debate continues, many hope that the focus will remain on celebrating the achievements of athletes like Vinesh Phogat, who inspire the nation with their dedication and excellence.

Vinesh Phogat will play her Finals tonight against USA wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt.
