Kufar song controversy

Diljit Dosanjh's most recent song, Kufar, was recently released, creating a buzz among the fans. The focus shifted from the song's visuals to a broader discussion on objectification after one dance move provoked a flurry of online criticism.

The choreographers responsible for the popular move have now spoken out and are defending their position.

In the song, Diljit stands behind a woman who lifts her leg during the line "jannat ke darwaaze kudiye.” Viewers objected to the lyrics and dance moves, sparking the backlash. The dance move was deemed unnecessary and objectifying by many.

Manushi Chillar and Diljit Dosanjh moved away from the choreography as the noise increased. However, the choreographers who created the steps, Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat, have now come forward to defend their position.

During a recent appearance on a Hindi Rush podcast, Shazia said the controversial part was actually the team’s favourite section.

She explained, “Firstly, Diljit’s song Kufar is great and the Jannat Ke Darwaaze sequence that you are talking about was actually our favorite portion… What can we say further if the audience has picked that part?"

Everyone on set, including the actors, dancers, DOP, and stars, understood exactly what the choreography entailed, Piyush continued.

He said, “It’s teamwork… everyone knows what’s happening… I think it was meant to happen."

Piyush also addressed the criticism and said some people saw the step differently, adding, “It’s a very sexy song, very international… If you see the song’s teaser, it’s written there, ‘Are you ready for a sexy dance?’ I don’t see anything negative in it; it was fun."

Shazia further noted, “We just got one brief for the song, that it’s a sexy song… both negatives and positives are always said."

However, Shazia also clarified that the woman performing the step wasn’t Manushi. “She wasn’t even the girl who did that step… And even if it was Manushi, I don’t think it would have been a big issue."

Piyush stated that creativity cannot survive if artists panic every time trolling occurs and added that if trolling starts affecting someone, they won’t be able to be creative. Later, Diljit responded in a live video, explaining that he was just standing there and didn’t even know what was happening around him.
