Bollywood's most versatile actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui said that the market in their industry are unfair to actors like them.
In an exclusive interview with news agency ANI, Nawazuddin said that marketing of a particular film plays a vital role in how the movie will fare after its release.
"They are unfair. There are two types of actors, one for the industry and one for the
public. The films of the actors for the public are not reaching the people. On the other hand, the films of the other actors are being released in 5,000 theatres irrespective of whether the audience likes them or not...," Nawazuddin told ANI in their podcast.
Nawazuddin also further elaborated on the reasons that help make the film a commercial success - which are 'publicity, marketing, screening count'
"Commercial success depends on a lot of factors... There is not one person involved..there is publicity marketing, screening count and more... Sometimes we don't get enough screenings... Humari films 200-300 pe khatam hojati hai ...uske shows subah hote hai aur raat mein hote hai (Our films usually wrap up at around 200-300 screenings... they have shows in the morning and at night.)...So we will keep fighting throughout our lives to give more value to our films by increasing the theatre screenings," he added.
Upset with no visibility
A visibly upset Nawazuddin said their films don't run in many screens and that's why not many people get to watch their movies in theatres.
"At least run our films in 5,000 theatres, or even run them in 3,000 theatres...Then judge me...Only then will you understand how much is our demand and how much is our supply," he said.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui has featured done many outstanding and challenging roles in his 25 year long career. He has delivered some powerful performances in films like The Lunchbox, Gangs of Wasseypur, Manto, Black Friday, Peepli Live, Sacred Games and many more.
He was last seen in Anand Surapur's directorial venture Rautu Ka Raaz, where was seen in the role of a cop who is settled in a quiet town of Uttarakhand.
Gangs Of Wasseypur initial reaction
Further talking about Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur, which saw him share screen space with Manoj Bajpayee, Nawaz accepted that initially he wasn't impressed with the first cut of the movie. The Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2 have achieved a cult status and are also running in theatres right now.
Nawaz revealed that he didn't like the film initially but was in awe of Anurag after watching the film's screening at the Cannes Film Festival.
“You can never tell while you’re working on a film. In fact, I didn’t know even after we’d finished it. When I watched the first cut, I thought, ‘Yeh kya bana diya hai yaar (What in the world has he made)’. But when I watched the final film at Cannes, after it had been refined, that’s when I realised why Anurag is Anurag," he said.
“He’s a genius man. He changed the face of Indian cinema, and the entire world took notice. He might not be appreciated in his own country, but I’m sorry, the world knows what he has done."
Gangs of Wasseypur was screened in the Directors’ Fortnight category at the 2012 edition of Cannes.
