Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the pharynx, and can occur because of a number of aetiological factors like viral, bacterial or fungal. While viral causes are more common, streptococcal pharyngitis has implications in rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
Pharyngitis can have different grades of severity, like mild, moderate, and severe. In mild cases, the person may only present with some discomfort in the throat, with low grade fever. Moderate and severe infections can lead to pain in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, headache, and high grade fever. On examination, the pharynx appears reddish, and some exudate may be seen. Concurrently, there can be an enlargement of the tonsils and lymphoid follicles.
In very severe cases, the soft palate can become swollen, along with the uvula. The cervical nodes (present in the neck) may become enlarged as well. Viral infections commonly cause discharge from the nose and hoarseness.
A foreign body sensation may be felt in the throat, for which the person may constantly keep clearing their throat.

There is some tiredness to the voice, and it becomes difficult for the person to talk for extended periods of time. Due to the irritability of the throat, there can be a tendency to cough. Even opening the mouth can cause retching.
The diagnosis can be made with the help of a culture swab, especially in case of bacterial pharyngitis. In cases where people have pharyngitis, bed rest and plenty of fluids are often advised.
Warm saline gargles (1/2 teaspoon in a glass of warm water) and pharyngeal irrigation can help relieve the symptoms.
Voice rest becomes necessary to avoid straining, especially in those with faulty voice production.
If one has a habit of clearing the throat frequently, it must be stopped. Eating soft foods and using a humidifier is often recommended.
Antibiotics may be advised in cases where the aetiology is bacterial. However, they must be avoided in viral cases to prevent the development of antibiotic-resistance. Over-the-counter pain medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be taken to relieve the symptom. Smoking should be avoided at all costs, as it can worsen the existing condition.
