Ajay Devgn talks about his Alcohol addiction

Bollywood star Ajay Devgn has shared how his relationship with alcohol has evolved over time, revealing a very personal aspect of his life.

The actor opened out about his journey from heavy drinking to adopting a healthier, more balanced lifestyle in a recent interview with Screen.

He admitted that there was a time when he drank quite a lot, but those days are now behind him. These days, Devgn limits himself to just one or two small glasses of malt whisky—each 30 ml—something he considers a big improvement from his earlier habits.

The turning point, he said, came when he decided to check into a wellness spa and give up alcohol completely for a month. That short break helped him reset both his mind and his body, sparking a new way of thinking about health, balance, and self-care.

Now, rather than drinking for the sake of it, Devgn enjoys savouring premium, limited-edition malt whiskies, which can cost around ₹60,000 a bottle.

“Being very honest, I don’t hide what I do. I used to drink quite a bit. And I’d reached a point where I could tell people that alcohol isn’t for those who don’t drink at all. It’s fine for people who drink in limitations. So, I was somewhere more than where I should be. So, I went to a wellness spa and stopped drinking,” Ajay shared.

He also described how drinking has become a small, calming ritual rather than a habit. “At that time, I didn’t use to have malt at all. Now, I've started enjoying my malt. It's not like even drinking for me. It’s like a routine which calms you, relaxes you. It’s just 30 ml with your food, maybe two 30 mls, but I've never crossed that limit since. It’s practically like not drinking, but you just enjoy it,” he explained.

In a lighter moment on The Ranveer Show, Devgn once joked, “Mera ek problem hai. Mujhe jitni bhi pila do, peene ke baad chadhti nahi hai.” He also noted that alcohol should bring out joy, not aggression or boredom, saying, “Jo peeta hai, should be happy after drinking. Warna usko peena nahi chahiye…”

Looking back, the Kaal actor revealed that he started drinking at just 14, influenced by peer pressure—a habit that became hard to shake. But his openness now shows a man who’s learned to take control, choosing mindfulness over impulse.

On the work front, Devgn was last seen in Vijay Kumar Arora’s Son of Sardaar 2, and will soon return to screens in De De Pyaar De 2, directed by Anshul Sharma, reprising his role as Ashish Mehra alongside Rakul Preet Singh.
