Bina Ramani is a woman who wears many hats. She is a fashion designer, entrepreneur, writer, restaurateur and a social activist. She recently appeared on ANI podcast with Smita Prakash and spoke about battling cancer. She said, "People are not drinking enough water and this I knew from my cancer. Dehydration is the big problem in bringing most diseases and cancer is one of them."
She even went on to add how one can add spices to water and have different concoctions to ensure one is taking adequate water during the day. The real question we must seek to know is if drinking less water or dehydration can really lead to cancer.
Moneycontrol team reached out to Dr Sachin Marda, Senior Consultant Oncologist & Robotic Surgeon (Cancer Specialist), Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, to understand the downsides of drinking less water and more on the subject.
He told Moneycontrol that there's no direct link between poor water intake and getting diagnosed with cancer. "See, evidence does not indicate that there's a link between the two. However, chronic dehydration can lead to disorders like kidney stones or urinary tract problems that may eventually and indirectly increase chances for some malignancies," he shared.
Dr Marda highlighted that there are many benefits of consuming water. "Washing out your insides is similar to drinking water. The water will increase the operation of every tissue in your body, cleanse your system, make you feel fuller, and reduce your caloric intake," shared Dr Marda.
Dr Marda warned that dehydration can invite a slew of serious issues. "Acute problems including fatigue, feeling dizzy, and kidney strain are the main results of dehydration, but chronic cases can raise the risk of kidney stones, UTIs, constipation, and heat-related disorders. In extreme cases, it may result in problems including low blood pressure, organ damage, or electrolyte imbalances," he stated.
Dr Marda shared that one has to be sincere and diligent about it. From setting phone reminders, carrying a reusable bottle with you to trying flavoured water by adding fruits like cucumber and lemon, there are many ways to ensure one is adequately hydrated at all times.
Dr Marda said that what one must remember is that one gets water from fruits and beverages also. "Adult women typically require 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) per day and adult men 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) per day," he concluded.
