Hair problems rarely appear overnight. Stress, pollution, poor diet and aggressive styling routines often weaken the scalp over time. When the scalp environment becomes imbalanced, hair follicles struggle to produce strong strands.
According to Sonal Gupta, founder SQIN Botanicals, hair care should begin at the root rather than the strand. “A healthy scalp provides the foundation for stronger, denser hair and prevents common concerns such as thinning and excessive shedding,” says Gupta. She added that natural oils nourish the scalp, support follicle health and improve blood circulation, all crucial elements for consistent hair growth.
“Rosmarinus officinalis, commonly known as rosemary oil, is widely recognised for boosting circulation to the scalp. Improved blood flow increases oxygen and nutrient delivery to hair follicles, which may support healthier hair growth,” Gupta says. She further adds, “Trigonella foenum-graecum, or methi extract, is another traditional remedy known for its protein-rich composition. These nutrients strengthen hair roots and help reduce breakage and hair fall.”
Moreover, carrier oils such as coconut and castor oil also play a vital role. Coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair shaft, reducing protein loss and reinforcing strands from within. Castor oil, meanwhile, supports thicker hair growth and helps nourish dry or brittle hair types.
Several Ayurvedic ingredients, informs Gupta, continue to be staples in holistic hair care routines. “Bhringraj and amla oils are traditionally used to address hair thinning and dandruff while maintaining scalp balance,” she tells. Additionally, peppermint oil helps stimulate blood circulation in the scalp, while tea tree oil protects it through antimicrobial properties. Lavender oil, known for its calming effect, can also soothe scalp irritation and help regulate excess oil production. Together, these oils create an environment that supports long-term scalp strength and hair vitality.
Even though hair oils can help prevent damage, it is important to make healthier lifestyle choices for better hair and scalp wellness. Proper hydration, balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and stress management, all contribute to a healthier scalp.
