Zubeen Garg’s cousin DSP Sandipan Garg sent to 7-day police custody

The investigation into the mysterious death of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg has taken a serious turn.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday arrested DSP Sandipan Garg, the late singer’s cousin, and produced him before the court, which remanded him to seven days in police custody.

According to SIT Chief and Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, “Today, we arrested DSP Sandipan Garg and produced him before the court. We will continue our investigation within the legal framework and follow all due procedures, including coordination with Singaporean authorities.”

Officials confirmed that Sandipan Garg was present in Singapore when Zubeen Garg drowned on September 19. He had been questioned several times before his arrest but reportedly failed to provide satisfactory answers to the SIT.

SIT intensifies probe, arrests now total five

This marks the fifth arrest in what has become one of Assam’s most closely watched investigations. Earlier, the SIT had taken into custody North East India Festival (NEIF) organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and two band members, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta — all of whom remain under police custody.

Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that the SIT will soon summon other members of the Singapore-based Assamese group who were with Zubeen Garg during the incident. “One person, Rupkamal Kalita, has appeared before the SIT and is undergoing investigation. There’s a special procedure for conducting an investigation in Singapore, and we are following all required legal processes,” he told reporters.

Probe expands to financial trail and communications

Sources from the CID said the SIT is now examining communications, financial records, and witness testimonies from both India and Singapore to piece together the final hours leading to Zubeen Garg’s drowning.

Adding another layer to the case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is expected to conduct raids at Shyamkanu Mahanta’s residence over alleged financial irregularities tied to the North East India Festival.

Earlier this week, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had confirmed that central agencies would soon review the accounts of individuals linked to the case, suggesting the investigation might extend beyond just the immediate circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s death.

The people of Assam, still mourning their cultural icon, are watching closely — waiting for answers, and more importantly, for justice.
