Disney and Pixar have delivered an emotional and financial powerhouse with “Inside Out 2,” the first film of the year to reach the impressive milestone of $1 billion at the global box office. In just 19 days since its release, the animated sequel has amassed $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million from international markets, totalling a worldwide gross of $1.015 billion.
This achievement places the emotional comedy among the elite group of 11 animated films that have joined the billion-dollar club, eight of which are Disney productions. Notably, “Inside Out 2” has become the fastest animated film to achieve this feat.
Released in theatres on June 14, “Inside Out 2” exceeded all expectations with a remarkable $151 million domestic opening, surpassing “Dune: Part 2” ($711 million) to become the highest-grossing opening of the year. It was also the first film since last July’s “Barbie” ($162 million) to debut with over $100 million. Since then, the sequel has dominated the box office charts for three consecutive weekends, securing its position as the highest-grossing movie of 2024 both domestically and globally. It has even surpassed the lifetime gross of its predecessor, 2015’s “Inside Out,” which earned $859 million worldwide.
These milestones are particularly significant for movie theatres, which have been eagerly awaiting a major hit during a generally lacklustre summer season.
Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners said, “On behalf of movie theatre owners across the country and around the world, we want to congratulate Disney’s ‘Inside Out 2’ for grossing $1 billion faster than any animated movie in history. The film’s stunning global success once again illustrates that audiences the world over will respond to compelling, entertaining movies, and that they want to enjoy them on the big screen.”
The success of “Inside Out 2” can be attributed to several factors, including the positive reception of the original film, excellent word-of-mouth, and broad audience appeal.
The sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann in his feature debut, hit theatres nearly a decade after the original, which explored the emotions of a young girl named Riley. In “Inside Out 2,” a teenage Riley encounters new emotions such as Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Nostalgia (June Squibb) as she navigates her summer at hockey camp. This continuation of Riley’s emotional journey has resonated deeply with audiences, ensuring its monumental box office success.
