Former One Direction member, Liam Payne was reportedly under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs at the time of his death in Argentina on Wednesday, October 16, according to TMZ. The Buenos Aires police disclosed that the singer had taken a drug known as Cristal, a highly dangerous substance known for inducing psychotic episodes and hallucinations.
Police sources explained that the drug “causes users to experience extreme highs and extreme lows, often making them aggressive.” They added that Liam's “erratic” behavior leading up to his death could have been influenced by the drug and may have caused him to hallucinate, possibly leading to his fatal jump from the third storey of his hotel room at CasaSur Palermo Hotel.
Before his tragic death, the Get Low singer was reportedly struggling with a serious drug addiction, which led to him being dropped by his record label, Universal, and his London-based publicist. Sources told Page Six that he had undergone a 100-day rehabilitation program, but industry insiders felt that his treatment was not effective. "Liam was battling a very significant drug addiction and his treatment, as those who knew him will attest, was not working," said an insider.
Hotel guests recounted witnessing the singer's unsettling behavior in the days before his death. One guest told the Daily Mail that she saw Liam smashing his laptop after reading an infuriating email. She recalled, "I went over, asked, ‘Are you OK?’ But he just kind of grunted. Then he said, ‘I used to be in a boy band. That’s why I’m so f**ked up.’"
Another guest reported seeing Liam involved in a heated argument with an unidentified woman over a money issue. Michael Fleischmann, who was also staying at the hotel, recounted an encounter where Liam Payne told her, “I’ll give you $20,000 just because I can. I have $55 million and I like to help people,” as reported by Page Six. Fleischmann described the singer's demeanor as “very upset, agitated, a little wild, walking around and pacing, and seemed very energized.”
An autopsy report released in Argentina on Thursday confirmed that Liam Payne died from multiple traumatic injuries, as well as internal and external bleeding. The report detailed around 25 injuries on his body, highlighting the severity of the fall that led to his tragic death.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death, with ongoing efforts to interview witnesses and piece together the events. Pablo Policicchio, communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, provided a grim account of what happened, confirming that Liam Payne "jumped" to his death. "He had jumped from the balcony of his room on the third floor of a Buenos Aires hotel," Policicchio stated, shedding light on the devastating incident that took the life of the 31-year-old singer.
