South Korean actor Kim Soo-Hyun has been in the limelight due to his alleged relationship controversy with late actress Kim Sae-Ron.

Recently, a new development has come to light as personal letters he wrote to his real girlfriend during his military service surfaced, shedding more clarity on the matter.

Since March this year, Soo-Hyun has been under public scrutiny after reports and supposed evidence suggested that he was romantically involved with Kim Sae-Ron when she was still a minor.

However, on September 30, Korean media reported that attorney Ko Sang Rok of Phil Law Firm, who is currently handling Soo-Hyun’s criminal case, revealed details from the actor’s military service records.

According to Ko, several letters written by Soo-Hyun to his actual partner were found, and the content makes it clear that the relationship was not with Sae-Ron.

In one of his diary entries dated July 30, 2018, Soo-Hyun wrote: “I’m definitely going to go on a trip with her this time next year. I’ll do everything new and never done before with her. We will go far for a long time. I want to cherish and love each other deeply, but sometimes fight and make up. There are so many things I want to experience.”

Another diary entry from August 3, 2018 read: “I’m getting hit with reality in the military, but one thing is clear. I am treating her better than before I enlisted. I still miss her and want to see her. I’m grateful to be able to make her feel good and happy. I’m reflecting deeply and grateful every day she waits for me.”

According to reports, the actor exchanged nearly 150 letters with his girlfriend from January 2018 until his discharge, many of which he personally delivered during his military breaks.

Attorney Ko emphasized that while letters to his girlfriend were filled with expressions of affection such as “I love you” and “I miss you,” the letters sent to the late Kim Sae-Ron contained nothing of the sort. Instead, they focused on routine reflections about military life or the weather.

Ko clarified that these writings were later mixed up with the letters to his partner, creating a false impression that Soo-Hyun had been in a romantic relationship with Sae-Ron during his enlistment. This, he stressed, has distorted the timeline and led to misleading accusations.

Claims that Soo-Hyun had a romantic relationship with Kim Sae-Ron while serving in the military are categorically denied by the clarification. For background, on February 16, 2025, Kim Sae-Ron, then 24 years old, was tragically discovered dead at her Seoul home. It was determined that she committed suicide.
