In a shocking turn of events, James McAvoy was reportedly attacked by a heavily intoxicated man during the Toronto International Film Festival 2025.
The incident took place late Monday night at Charlotte’s Room, a bar just two blocks from the TIFF headquarters, where James was unwinding with the producers of his directorial debut, California Schemin’.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the drunk man had been asked to leave the venue by staff members. While being escorted out around 11:55 pm, he suddenly swung at McAvoy, catching the actor completely off guard.
The bar staff quickly restrained the man, who was later removed from the premises. McAvoy, best known for films like Split and Atonement, was left stunned but did not sustain serious injuries.
The bar has so far refused to comment on the altercation, keeping its official response under wraps.
McAvoy has been in Toronto to attend the premiere of California Schemin’, his first film as a director. The project, which is already generating Oscar buzz, is competing for the TIFF People’s Choice Award and could become a strong contender in the Best Picture race next year.

This isn’t the first time McAvoy has made headlines during TIFF, but the circumstances are far from what fans expected. On social media, reactions ranged from shock to support, with fans calling the incident “disturbing” and praising McAvoy for handling it with calm.
While the attack has sparked safety concerns during the festival, the spotlight remains firmly on McAvoy’s big leap behind the camera. For now, California Schemin’ continues to be one of TIFF 2025’s most talked-about premieres.
