Coolie box office prediction day 1: Rajinikanth’s film targets Rs 150 Crore, will it set a new Tamil cinema record?

Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has hit the theatres worldwide today (August 14). Produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the film had generated massive buzz before release. Fans and industry experts are now asking the big question - can Coolie become the first Tamil film to cross Rs 150 crore on its opening day?

According to film industry tracker AB George, the advance bookings for Coolie are extraordinary. Worldwide pre-sales are estimated at around Rs 115 crore even before the first show begins. In India alone, advance bookings have touched nearly Rs 57 crore, while overseas markets have contributed more than $6.6 million. These numbers already make Coolie one of the biggest openers in Tamil cinema history.

Rajinikanth, who is celebrating 50 years in the film industry, is appearing in his 171st lead role with Coolie. The superstar’s popularity across generations, combined with Lokesh Kanagaraj’s brand of stylish action thrillers, has made the film one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.

The collaboration between the two has excited both hardcore fans and general audiences, which is reflected in the advance sales.

The first-day collection will only be confirmed after the release, but early trends suggest that the film could indeed touch or even cross the Rs 150 crore mark worldwide.

High occupancy is being reported across theaters in Tamil Nadu and other South Indian states. Overseas markets such as the USA, Middle East, and Malaysia are also showing strong demand. If the audience response matches the hype, Coolie could create a new benchmark not just for Tamil cinema, but for Indian cinema as a whole.

Ahead of the release, director Lokesh Kanagaraj posted a heartfelt message. He thanked Rajinikanth for trusting his vision and giving him complete creative freedom. He also praised co-stars Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan for their support. Lokesh expressed gratitude to Sun Pictures and producer Kalanithi Maran for backing the project over nearly two years of hard work. He requested fans not to share spoilers, reminding everyone that Coolie is a standalone Rajinikanth film.

All eyes are now on the first day box office numbers. With record-breaking pre-sales, a festive release date, and Rajinikanth’s unstoppable star power, Coolie has every chance to rewrite history by becoming the first Tamil film to score Rs 150 crore on its opening day.
