SUGA, the noted rapper and member of the globally renowned boy band BTS, was involved in a drunk driving incident on the night of August 6, 2024. Following the incident, there is speculation that SUGA may have his driver's license revoked after being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

On August 7, 2024, South Korean media outlet Newsis reported that SUGA is currently under investigation by the Yongsan Police Station for allegedly breaking traffic laws. In South Korea, electric kickboards or electric scooters can be rented with a valid license and are subject to traffic rules and regulations similar to those for cars.

SUGA was found to be over the legal alcohol limit. The results of the breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol concentration was over 0.08%, the threshold for revoking a driver's license. Although the exact percentage has not been disclosed, this suggests that SUGA's license is likely to be revoked.

According to a report by Hankook Ilbo, the police investigating SUGA's case confirmed that the electric scooter he was driving was not a kickboard but also had a seat. This distinction is important under South Korean law, as it determines the severity of the charges and penalties.

SUGA's case could be investigated under two pretenses:

1. Transport with an Internal Engine: If categorised as such, it will fall under the same regulations as drunk driving a car. This would mean SUGA could face charges and penalties similar to those for car DUI offenses, including license revocation.

2. Electric Kickboard: If the scooter is classified as an electric kickboard, SUGA will face a fine of 100,000 KRW (approximately $75 USD) and his driver's license will be revoked.

On the night of August 6, SUGA was found driving an electric scooter while under the influence of alcohol. He was returning home after having dinner and was wearing a helmet. While parking his scooter at home, he fell. A nearby police officer, upon detecting alcohol on SUGA's breath, administered a breathalyzer test, which confirmed that he was drunk. SUGA was then taken home under police custody.

Both BTS' agency, BIGHIT MUSIC, and SUGA himself have issued statements apologising for the incident. SUGA expressed his regret for bringing "disappointing" news to his fans and admirers, taking full responsibility for his actions and promising to be more cautious in the future. The agency also apologised for the disappointment caused by SUGA's behaviour.
