Ram Pothineni has been in a lot of bad movies in the past five years, but Andhra King Taluka is a big step in the right direction.
His comeback movie is interesting because it doesn't come from a big-name director; instead, it comes from young filmmaker Mahesh Babu Pachigolla, whose last movie, Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty, won hearts with its writing.
Ram tries to reinvent himself in a new way with the help of Mythri Movie Makers and Kannada star Upendra in Andhra King Taluka . And for the most part, the movie works.
Plot:
Set in the charming Godapalli Lanka of the Godavari region, the movie is about Sagar (Ram Pothineni), a sweet, movie-loving boy who looks up to superstar Surya (Upendra). When Sagar falls in love with Mahalakshmi (Bhagyashri Borse), her father makes fun of his status. This makes Sagar want to change his fate by promising to build a theatre in their remote village, which doesn't even have electricity.
Sagar makes the shocking decision to sell the theatre and send the money to his idol Surya just when his dream and love seem within reach. What makes him do this crazy thing? How do Surya's 100th movie and Sagar's love story fit together? Will his devotion get him love and recognition as a hero? The answers come out in a mix of emotion, drama, and fanboy excitement.
Performances:
Ram Pothineni plays Sagar with surprising restraint. This time, he plays a grounded character with sincerity and charm instead of over-the-top mass elevations. This is clearly the most honest performance he's given in a long time.
Upendra is a great choice for Surya, even though he doesn't have much screen time. His presence gives the scene more weight, and his delivery at the climax is especially good. Bhagyashri Borse has a strong first performance. She looks sure of herself, does a good job, and has good chemistry with Ram.
Rao Ramesh and Murali Sharma, make the movie better with their ability to handle emotional scenes.
Rao Ramesh's temple scene and Murali Sharma's moment before the break are two of the best in the movie. Rahul Ramakrishna, Satya, Rajeev Kanakala, and Sindhu Tolani are all very helpful.
Technical Parts:
The film's music by Vivek–Mervin is one of its best parts. The melodies are lovely, and the background music makes the emotional parts even better.
Cinematographers Siddhartha Nuni and George C. Williams show the Godavari belt in all its colour, especially during the cyclone scene.
Editing, on the other hand, doesn't work well in the first half, which seems to go on for at least 10 to 15 minutes longer than it should. The VFX is weak, especially in the scene with the giant wheel.
Analysis:
Andhra King Taluka is different because it is honest. Instead of using fan-war cliches, Mahesh Babu Pachigolla creates an emotional world around a simple fan and his hero. The writing is best in the second half, when Sagar's backstory adds depth and emotion.
The conversations are one of the best parts; they make you think without being preachy. The movie gets going after the first block and keeps up the emotional momentum until a great climax.
The first hour is slow and the VFX are hit or miss, but these are not enough to ruin the movie's emotional core.
Verdcit:
Andhra King Taluka is a warm, feel-good drama with heartfelt writing, strong music, and honest performances. Ram Pothineni has been stuck in a rut for years, but he finally finds a movie that fits his strengths. Even though the movie has pacing problems, it promises to be a fun time at the theater for families and people who like honest stories.
A well-deserved return for Ram, and it will probably do well at the box office.
