A restored 4K version of Raj Kapoor's 1951 classic film "Awara" will be screened at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13th. This announcement was made by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) on Monday.
The black-and-white classic "Awara," starring Nargis, Raj Kapoor, and Prithviraj Kapoor, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13th. This screening is part of the TIFF Classics section to celebrate Raj Kapoor's 100th birth anniversary. The National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) shared this news on its official X page with the caption, "Get ready for a cinematic milestone! Awara, a classic film produced and directed by Raj Kapoor, has been restored by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI). It is one of several iconic Raj Kapoor films being restored to celebrate his centenary in December 2024. The colour grading of the restored Awara was expertly supervised by Kunal Kapoor, Raj Kapoor's nephew and Shashi Kapoor's son. This project is part of the National Film Heritage Mission and is funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India. The film follows the story of Raj, a poor young man played by Raj Kapoor, who joins a criminal gang to support his mother.
Raj, played by Raj Kapoor, decides to change his ways after falling for Rita (Nargis). The film, featuring Leela Chitnis and K. N. Singh, competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951. Raj Kapoor, known as the Showman of Indian Cinema, was born on December 14, 1924. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will run from September 5th to 15th.
