Mumbai woke to heavy rain on Monday morning as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed several districts of Maharashtra under an orange alert, warning of intense downpours and thunderstorms through the day.

According to figures reported by News18, Mumbai witnessed varying rainfall levels between 8.30 am on Sunday and 5.30 am on Monday. Colaba recorded the highest at 88.2 mm, followed by Bandra at 82 mm, Byculla at 73 mm and Tata Power station at 70.5 mm. Juhu reported 45 mm, while Santacruz and Mahalaxmi stations registered 36.6 mm and 36.5 mm respectively.

Orange alert across multiple districts

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Beed, Ahilyanagar, Pune and Latur, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. It cautioned that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph are likely in these areas.

Neighbouring Konkan districts, including Ratnagiri, are also on alert. Pune and Satara ghats remain under orange warning as well, with authorities closing schools and colleges in Pune’s suburbs in anticipation of continued heavy showers, News18 reported.

Local warnings

Independent forecaster Mumbai Nowcast issued an early morning update on X (formerly Twitter), warning of prolonged downpours. “4:30 AM Update. Very Heavy Rains since last 3 hours across South-Central Mumbai. More non stop heavy rains to continue atleast next 2 hours. Waterlogging likely in many areas #MumbaiRains,” the handle posted, along with visuals of flooded streets.

The forecast was quickly echoed by residents, with several users sharing photos and videos of waterlogged stretches and traffic disruptions. The downpour left parts of south and central Mumbai struggling with slow-moving traffic during the early commute.

Showers to persist

With rain predicted to continue through Monday, authorities are on alert for potential flooding in low-lying neighbourhoods. The weather office has urged people to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on advisories.

As the monsoon intensifies across Maharashtra, civic bodies in Mumbai and Pune are reportedly monitoring vulnerable zones and deploying emergency teams to manage any disruption caused by the heavy showers.
