Actor Divya Prabha reacts to criticism for nude scene from All We Imagine As Light: I don't understand their mindset

Malayalam actress Divya Prabha has recently found herself at the centre of a controversy surrounding her role in the critically acclaimed film, All We Imagine As Light. The film, directed by Payal Kapadia, won the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. However, its release in India was marred by the leakage of nude scenes featuring Prabha, sparking widespread criticism and moral policing.

In a recent interview with Onmanorama, Prabha addressed the backlash with grace and defiance.

She acknowledged that she had anticipated such a reaction, given the conservative societal norms in Kerala. "We are a community that celebrates filmmakers like Yorgos Lanthimos and even the actress who won the Oscar for her work in the film. But we are intolerant of Malayali women doing such roles. I am glad to see there were people, especially men, who opposed the act. This shows there is a lot of hope in the present generation," she said.

The actress emphasized that the leaked scenes were a small part of a larger narrative, and that the film had been duly approved by the Central Board of Film Certification.

She questioned the mindset of those who shared the leaked videos, stating, "Those who shared the leaked videos comprise 10 per cent of the population, and I don't understand their mindset. Malayalis were also part of the Central Board, which gave us the approval."

Divya also addressed the criticism that she had performed the nude scene for fame.

She dismissed this notion, highlighting her established career and numerous accolades. "As an actor, I do scripts I am convinced about, and I was totally convinced about my character in All We Imagine As Light. Some people criticised me, saying that I did the nude scene for fame. I have won several awards and have also been part of critically acclaimed movies. I don't think I need to strip naked to earn fame," she asserted.

Divya Prabha's response has been widely praised by fans and critics alike. Her courage to stand up against censorship and misogyny has inspired many. Her willingness to challenge societal norms and push the boundaries of artistic expression is a testament to her dedication to her craft.
